Empowering Future Leaders: A Journey Towards Equity and Inclusion

At AMDSB, we are committed to fostering a community where every voice is heard and valued. This year, we are proud to continue our partnership with unlearn. to provide our students with opportunities in leadership and social justice advocacy. This week, students from our secondary schools and Stratford Intermediate School (SIS) gathered at the Brodhagen Community Centre for an inspiring workshop focused on student voice and that used graphic design as a way to provoke thoughtful discussions. Students also had the opportunity to discuss issues within their own school communities and develop action plans for addressing their needs.

As we gathered, the energy was palpable. Students embraced their roles as activists, allies and advocates, eager to learn and grow. Lex from MDHS captured the spirit of the event perfectly: “Leaders come in many different shapes and sizes, and everybody could be a leader.” This sentiment echoed throughout the day as students collaborated, shared ideas, and explored the diverse paths to leadership.

Nova from SIS reminded us that “not everything is as it seems, and everyone has their own opinions.” This reflection highlighted the importance of listening to different perspectives as we work to create more inclusive schools and communities. Our students recognized that true leadership involves understanding and valuing the voices of others.

Ella from SIS shared her enthusiasm about the workshop: “This event sprouted new ideas and creativity, and if schools come together, we can create a better future.” It is this kind of collaboration that drives our commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion across the board. We believe that by working together, we can address the systemic challenges that exist and pave the way for meaningful change.

Finnley from CHSS emphasized the impact of the day’s lessons: “We learned about breaking barriers and supporting equity.” This commitment to breaking down barriers is essential for fostering an environment where all students can thrive.

As we move forward, we are excited to see the outcomes of this initiative. We are dedicated to creating an evolving and responsive Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Action Plan. We will know we’ve succeeded when our actions lead to real change across all sectors of AMDSB.

Thank you to our students, educators, and community members for your ongoing support as we champion diversity, equity and inclusivity in our schools. The future is bright, and it starts with our students!
